Position size calculator
Enter your stop and the risk you accept. The calculator gives the lots, the loss at the stop and the profit at the target, in your account currency.
An educational estimate, not advice. Prices can gap through a stop, so the real loss can be larger. Check contract size, pip value and costs with your broker before you trade. Trading carries a high risk of loss.
How the size is worked out
Size starts from the risk, not from the market. With a 10,000 account and 1 percent risk you accept a loss of 100. If one lot of EUR/USD loses 200 between your entry and a 20-pip stop, the size is 100 ÷ 200 = 0.50 lots. A stop twice as far away gives half the size, so the loss stays the same.
The calculator rounds down to your broker’s lot step, so the real loss never exceeds the risk you chose. If even the smallest lot is too large for your stop, it says so and shows what that lot would risk. It also checks that the stop and target sit on the right side of the entry, warns above 2 percent risk per trade, and shows when spread and commission eat most of the move.

Questions
- How do I calculate position size?
- Decide the amount you are willing to lose: your balance times the percentage you risk. Divide it by what one lot loses between your entry and your stop. The calculator does this in your account currency, adds spread and commission, and rounds down to a lot your broker can fill, so the loss at the stop stays at or under your risk.
- Why does the account currency matter?
- A pip on GBP/JPY is worth yen, a DAX point is worth euros. If your account is in dollars, that value has to be converted at the current rate. The calculator converts at a live rate, or exactly from the pair itself when it contains your account currency (USD/JPY in a dollar account).
- What percentage should I risk per trade?
- No figure suits everyone. Many traders keep it to 1 to 2 percent so that a losing streak stays survivable. The calculator shows what 3, 5 and 10 losses in a row would leave of your account at the risk you choose.
- Are the results exact?
- They are estimates. Contract sizes, pip values, spreads, commissions and slippage differ by broker, and a fast market can fill a stop at a worse price. Copy the contract details from your platform and check the result there before you trade.
